Have you ever glanced down at your diamond ring and noticed that it looked dull and lackluster? Most likely, your diamond has lost its sparkle due to dirt and oil. Normal everyday wear and tear can take its toll on even the most beautiful baubles, so it’s important that you regularly clean your jewels.
According to gem experts, the safest way to clean your diamonds is simply with warm, soapy water and a soft brush. Select a mild soap such as Ivory dishwashing soap and a baby toothbrush, and work your way in and around the various intricacies of the diamond’s setting. Make sure to clean behind your stone, as well, because dirt can hide there and make your diamond appear cloudy.
Of course, there are specifically designed products for diamond cleaning, and you can use those if you’d rather. Just make sure you follow the directions carefully. Many of those cleansers are quite strong and not recommended for extended exposure such as overnight soaking. Also, if you plan to use a cleaner specifically for diamonds, make sure it won’t harm the precious metals surrounding your stone. For instance, if your diamond earrings are set in platinum, make sure your diamond cleaner won’t tarnish or taint the platinum. Some beauty magazines recommend using toothpaste as a diamond cleaner, but gem experts do not concur. Today’s toothpastes are much too abrasive so stick to the warm soapy water instead.
Want to keep those diamonds sparkling in between cleanings? Then you’ll need to take special care of your jewelry. For instance, slip off your diamond ring and diamond bracelets when cleaning the house so you’ll avoid exposing them to harsh cleansers. Also, it’s a good idea to use hairspray before you put on your diamonds so you won’t dull them with a layer of lacquer. Lastly, clean your diamonds at least once a week to keep them as sparkly as the day you first put them on. Diamonds really are forever, so you might as well keep them looking good for that long! |
